African professor teaching on money supply

No Courage in Alcohol

A strange fear gripped me when I was pointed out by one of my colleagues in an economics class of more than 400 intelligent students from 28 different African countries, to represent my country in a presentation on the topic; ‘Money Supply’.

Through out the rest of the day, I couldn’t eat and those questions kept flashing in my mind, ‘How can I stand before these intelligent set of people and speak without fainting? In the first place, what do I know? Why was I chosen?’ I tend to overlook all those probing questions and do away with them from my mind but they creep back again and again. I had no peace I couldn’t do anything productive.

Days have passed and the day for the presentation is approaching, I searched for ways to overcome fright but I felt they cannot work for me.

I contacted a friend, who promised that he will supply me with Whiskey (Alcohol), he said is the sure solution to my problem because he has been using it. I was very happy to hear that there was a solution to my problem. I gave in and supply the guy with enough money to bring me the Whiskey.

On the last day, he came back with a bad news that he could not go to the town and get the drink. I whirled down in fear again.

All this while I forgot totally about the existence of the One and only Savior, My Director, My judge and My Strength. MY GOD MY COURAGE who is always ready to help me in all circumstances. After all my preparation, I called my Dad and informed him about the presentation and he said

“I WILL PRAY FOR YOU.”

That has been my re-booster and energizer, a solution to my problems. I felt saved and he reminds me of God.

On the night of the last day, I opened my Bible to the book of Joshua 1, where God told Joshua to be strong and courageous. In that chapter the statement has been repeated three times in that same chapter verse 5 says ‘I will not fail you or abandon you’. I felt so strong and ready to go and then I realized every new job is a challenge without God it can be frightening, with God it can be a great fulfilling adventure.

Finally, the day came, I made my presentation without fear or shaking, no butterfly was in my stomach, I did it all perfect and I realized that all my solution was (is) in the Lord through prayers and NOT alcohol. I was extremely applauded by friends and lecturers; I was told that I gave the best presentation ever in economics class by the lecturer.

Philippians 4:6 says “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything, tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done”. My father knows where the solution lies, and I blotted out my fear, worries with prayers and God answered me. (Alcohol might have made me look stupid before those congregation) but prayers made me a hero. ARE YOU STILL GUZZLING THAT BEER?

Every day we face tough situations, difficult people and temptations, however, God promises that he will never abandon us or fail us. By asking God to direct me, I conquered my challenges. What about you? where do you a find solution to your problems? Are you still going to guzzle the liquor as a remedy to your problems?

“Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you”. Ephesians 5:18 NLT
